Interview - Scott Karstetter - Smart To-Do List

with Scott Karstetter, creator of Smart To-Do List
Scott has been working as an Electrical/Software engineer for almost 8 years. Scott, with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, will be graduating with a masters degree in Computer Science spring 2009. Smart To-Do List was started as a mISV project toward the end of 2007, released May 2008. Scott also started a blog to round out his mISV efforts last september, available at: http://www.smartproductivity.com

What got you started on the todo list, are you a GTD guy? Just seemed like a good idea?
I started getting interested in GTD a few years ago after reading some posts on Lifehacker.com. I picked up the Getting Things Done book and became pretty hooked on most of the techniques used in the book.

I've been developing software for my day job for almost 8 years now and I thought it would be nice if I could make some extra cash at home by making some simple applications. I had tried out several to-do list applications but I could never find one that was simple to use and didn't look like a Windows 95 application. Most of the to-do list applications out there have so many options when all you want to do is add some tasks to a list. I've seen quite a few apps that will have 7 or 8 fields just to create a new item. I wanted to make a to-do list application that was so easy that you would actually use it. This is why I created Smart To-Do List.
What makes Smart To-Do List different?
Smart To-Do List simply has two input fields: a to-do / command box and a tag field. The to-do / command box allows you to interact with the lists without ever having to touch the mouse. Basically anything that can be done with the mouse in my software can also be done from the keyboard. The simplicity doesn't mean it isnt' powerful though, you can still tag, filter, prioritize, and export the data.
Has the blog really helped? Has it changed any of your ideas about who your customers are and what they are looking for?
The blog has helped somewhat. It gives me an easy outlet to post updates and to receive feedback on those updates from customers. I believe once I'm out of graduate school and have more free time I'll be able to use the blog more effectively. Full time work + wife + two kids + grad school = not much free time!
Thanks for taking time to talk with me Scott,

Needs - Tips on becoming a personal assistant

From a connection on LinkedIn:

" The girlfriend of one of my family members is a young stay at home mom who wants to start her own Virtual Assistant online business. Where should she start? Who can she talk to about what this is really like? What works in 2009, and what should she avoid? "

If you have interest in this item, please Email Me, and I will put you in contact with the source.

Needs - SAP/Business Planning and Consolidation Demo

Does your office run SAP? Need a single point for financial reporting and planning? Something that lets you manipulate your data in a spreadsheet in a CPA-friendly way?

I have a contact that would like to at least demo a SQL-backed product that integrates with your SAP/SQL software (and even without SAP if you run SQL Server). No obligation, but it might just solve your managment reporting needs, or at least make your Accountants very happy.

If you are interested in any way, please Email Me, and I will get you in contact with the source.

Needs - Market Feedback

Looking for feedback on companies that might need any of the following:

1. a Bluetooth-interfaced temperature sensor (PC can be 10-100 meters from measuring point without needing wires)
2. a pole-mounted remote-controlled camera tilt unit.
3. a data gathering station for light industrial workers to track productivity as work items come into and out of a workstation. Start/Stop on each item, and general real-time productivity metrics for management

If you have any interest in any of these items, please Email Me, and I will get you in contact with the source.

Talking with a person with the following skills looking for contracts/work:

1. Python or Ruby
2. SQL Development
3. Linux SysAdmin

On the linux sysadmin front:

"I have been using Linux since about 1993 when the first version I could get my hands on was on CDROM in a book and was based on the slackware release. To this day, I am engaged in development of systems that run on linux, whether processing millions of calls per day or running website services."

I've known this individual for more than 5 years, and have worked with him on a high-volume aggregation/processing system in the telecom industry, C/MySQL (replicated database)

If interested in being put in contact with this person, Email Me

New Years Resolution - Start Something.

On new year's eve, I decided to make a resolution I could keep. I would contact 5 new people a day. After about 5 minutes I decided that would be VERY difficult to manage, as I exhausted my contacts - to get me much past January, thanks for Dunbar's Number.
So, I decided I'll contact one person - that bought me some time ( 5 people/day for a week was 35 people - at one person/day, I'd buy a whole month ). Great, but why the heck would these people want to talk to me? Well, maybe if I could do something for them - and not in the "here's what my business will do for you" sort of way. I will try to help them, and barring that, I will find someone who can help them with a need.
Now, I've gotten quite a few "Find me a job" sort of needs - and I'm ok with that. I've gotten "Cash would be nice" - and I think it would be nice too. I'm looking for solid needs.
Do you need someone to work at your company? Do you need a specific kind of job or work or contract? Do you need leads for a certain product? Do you need a product?
So, I'm matching needs - but *I* need to contact people and find out what they need, and what they provide ... so why no email me, and we'll talk.
I'll post "anonymized" versions of needs here to help bring in people searching for stuff as well.
